Estonia and Germany
Germany first recognised Estonia's independence de jure on 9 July 1921. Diplomatic relations between Estonia and Germany were restored on 28 August 1991. Thereafter the respective embassies were re-opened in Bonn and Tallinn. In February 1999 Germany opened its new embassy building in Tallinn, and in September 2001 President Meri re-opened the historic Estonian embassy building in Berlin.
Riina Kionka has been Estonia’s ambassador to Germany since September 2000. Estonia is also represented in Germany by honorary consuls: Ulf Lange in Hamburg, Jochen Friedrich Kirchhoff in Düsseldorf, Hans Berger in Kiel and Helmut Aurenz in Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg. Germany’s ambassador to Estonia is Gerhard Jürgen Dröge (as of September 2002).

Investments
The percentage of German investments in Estonia is modest. According to the Bank of Estonia, as of 31 December 2002, German direct investments in Estonia were 86 million euros, equalling 2.1% of the total volume of direct investments made in Estonia. Thus, Germany ranks in 7th place by its investment total. As of August 2002, 279 enterprises with German participation had been registered with the Estonian Enterprise Register, 76 of them are 100% based on German capital. There are 12 branches of German enterprises in Estonia.
Relatively few large investments have been made into Estonia from Germany, but smaller firms created with German capital are numerous.
The biggest enterprises in Estonia with German share capital are: AS EESTI GAAS (transport of oil, gas and liquid fuel), OÜ DYNAMIT NOBEL EESTI (production of explosives), AS SAB (refuse collection, maintenance of streets and canalisation), AS EVR KOEHNE (construction, renovation and railway service), AS SINDI ELASTONIA (twisting yarn of synthetic fibres, production of yarn and filaments of artificial fibre), AS DOLD PUIDUTÖÖSTUS (production of fibreboards and wooden panels), OÜ MAX SCHÖN EESTI (retail sales of sanitary and water-supply installations and fittings).
